Strutting down the empty, dimly-lit Everington Street in East Los Angeles in a crop top, jeans that hug her slim figure and three-inch heels that click on the sidewalk, Alton is ready.

She enters Steven’s Steakhouse – the “Steven’s” LED sign lighting the way – and heads straight to the host, handing him her credit card. It’s $10 – a small price to pay for the night she’s about to have.

She walks past the table and turns left, in through the double doors of the bachata room.

It’s 10 p.m., and Bachata Night is just getting started.

‘Just horrific’: Community mourns the loss of woman killed on campus

Junko Hanafusa, 65, died on Dec. 25, 2023, after she was attacked with a sledgehammer outside the El Camino College Gymnasium while walking her dog and collecting recyclables.

The Union spoke to neighbors who knew Hanafusa about the Dec. 24 attack. They said she would regularly walk in the neighborhood with her “little white dog,” collecting recyclables in the surrounding areas including Alondra Park and El Camino College.

Jeffery Davis, the man arrested and charged for the killing of Hanafusa, pleaded not guilty to the charges during his Jan. 17 arraignment. He has had three preliminary hearing settings, with the next scheduled for July 25.

The Union has made several attempts to interview Davis but his public defense attorney Murrey Correa said he is unavailable for comment.

El Camino to slash $40 million from budget as it faces major deficit

El Camino College could start collecting parking fees from students in 2024 as part of its moneymaking strategy to address a possible bankruptcy.

Other changes in student fees are on the table; a $24 per unit increase in non-resident tuition fees was already approved by the Board of Trustees in March.

El Camino is facing a $20 million deficit for July 2023 to June 2025 and another $20 million from July 2025 to June 2026.

This is according to El Camino President Brenda Thames’ April 29 letter addressed to the campus community.

Man accused of killing woman on campus attends preliminary hearing

The man arrested for the Dec. 24, 2023 sledgehammer attack of a woman on campus faced the judge for the second time at the Torrance Municipal Court on Wednesday, March 6 for a preliminary hearing.

The hearing lasted about three minutes. Jeffery Davis, who is charged with murder in the killing of a 65-year-old Japanese woman, arrived in court in a blue prison jumpsuit with hands cuffed.

The judge, Thomas Sokolov, set the next preliminary hearing for May 15.

Both the prosecution and defense attorneys said they are still gathering evidence for the case. Walter Quinteros, the deputy district attorney, said he is waiting on the results of the autopsy and other evidence.

Power outage shuts down El Camino campus

Hundreds of classes were canceled and campus was shut down just before 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7 due to an outage knocking out power in parts of El Camino College’s campus, El Camino Village and Alondra Park.

The outage affected phone lines, computers, lights, automatic doors, elevators, some restroom facilities on campus and shut down traffic lights on Manhattan Beach Boulevard and Redondo Beach Boulevard.

South Bay Community reacts to Israel-Hamas war

With daily updates on the Israel-Hamas war, El Camino College students, employees and community members are feeling the weight of the conflict.

While no vigil or protest events have taken place at El Camino, students including biochemistry major Lily Nemzer said several students in her class are troubled by the Israel-Hamas war.

“I know there was one student who is a mother and her husband is Israeli and her kids were really upset about what was going on,” Nemzer said.
